Description
Cancer Biology Specialization is published by Coursera Academy. The healthcare system is a rapidly evolving field, driven by new research leading to medical advances. This specialization was developed at Johns Hopkins University and is taught by leading Hopkins faculty and cancer experts. This course focuses on cancer biology, from the basics of cancer biology to how it metastasizes and, specifically, screening guidelines for prostate cancer, the most common cancer among American men. The specialization begins with an introduction to cancer biology. It first introduces the molecular biology of cancer and its biological characteristics. It also examines risk factors for the major cancers worldwide, including lung, breast, colon, prostate, liver, and stomach. Johns Hopkins experts explain how cancer is staged, the main ways cancer is diagnosed through imaging, and how major cancers are treated. This course also explores the understanding of cancer metastasis and explains how cancer spreads.
The main theories of metastasis are described and the biology of the steps in this process is explained. The target organs of metastasis are also introduced and how metastasis can have a devastating impact on the patient is examined. Finally, understanding prostate cancer is one of the main focuses of this specialization. The necessary tools to investigate the prevalence of prostate cancer, including risk factors, stages and associated treatments, are taught. Participants will be able to identify the main types of cancer worldwide, understand the role of genes in cancer risk and development, and describe the cellular characteristics of cancer. The processes of uncontrolled cell division, mutation, neoangiogenesis and their impact on tumor formation will also be explained. In this way, participants will become familiar with prostate cancer and be able to list the risk factors. In particular, how prostate cancer is identified, diagnosed, staged and treated will be examined. At the end of this specialization, students will have the knowledge necessary to identify cancer risk factors, disease stages, and treatment methods, and will gain a comprehensive understanding of the biological mechanisms of cancer and metastasis processes.
