Description
Learn to Program & Model Procedural Cities in Unity/Blender is a course on programming and modeling procedural cities in Unity and Blender published by Udemy Academy. Procedural generation in games and virtual environments leads to the algorithmic generation of infinitely unique computer-generated experiences. Its potential lies in the ability to automatically develop digital content on demand and reduce the amount of work required of programmers and modelers. However, a lot of preparation is required to implement such a strategy. A thorough understanding of the role that both sides of the game development coin (technical/logic and art/design) play in procedural generation is key to a successful implementation. In this course, Penny and Mike bring unique experience to both programmers and artists, combining their skills and years of academic and practical knowledge to bring you a comprehensive learning experience in which you will gain valuable content and mastery.
This course uses Unity 2020.3 and Blender 3.0 and is compatible with Windows and Mac. The content is presented in two parts that can be studied in any order, independently or together. In Part A, Mike walks you through a series of steps that start by blocking out your city with simple locations, an important and often overlooked design step. With these tips in mind, we’ll add a bit more detail to bring the city to life and properly draw the road system. Once these initial steps are out of the way, Mike will focus on thinking in a modular way, considering the fundamental principles needed to build our assets. Finally, we’ll build the pieces first manually, then automatically, first with Blender’s Modifier Stack, and finally fully procedurally using Blender 3.0’s new gamepad system.
What you will learn
- The nature of 3D space and the generation of a grid for displaying and combining 3D models with each other
- Identify several procedural algorithms that can be used to generate virtual city maps.
- Use fractal and dynamic methods to algorithmically generate buildings and cities.
- Create a custom city map complete with districts, population density, and vegetation.
Who is this course suitable for?
- Intermediate programmers and 3D artists are interested in procedural generation.
